The Sims 4 Update Day: Essential Tips to Protect Your Mods and Saves

If you’ve been in The Sims Community for any extended period of time, you know that The Sims 4 update days can be super exciting (and nerve-racking!) New patches often bring fun new features, bug fixes, and sometimes even free content. But with every update comes the same challenge: keeping your Sims 4 Mods, CC, and saves safe.

If you’ve ever updated your game only to find that your bods have broken, your custom content (CC) disappeared, or (worst of all), your save file got corrupted, you know how stressful it can be. Don’t worry, though! In this guide, I will walk you step-by-step through everything you should do on The Sims 4 update day to make the process smooth, safe, and error-free.

Why You Need to Prepare for Every Update

Every time The Sims Team releases a patch, there is always a chance that it will conflict with your Mods and/or CC. Even the smallest updates can break large gameplay mods, cause visual glitches, or prevent your game from even launching at all. That’s why backing up Sims 4 saves and removing your mods folder is a safe practice for update day.

Sims 4 Update Day Checklist

  1. REMOVE YOUR MODS FOLDER: Before updating, browse to your “The Sims 4” directly and move your entire Mods folder somewhere safe (such as your desktop). This presents broken mods that can crash your game immediately after the update.
  2. BACKUP YOUR SAVES: Navigate to your “The Sims 4” folder, copy the saves folder, and paste it into a backup location. Now, if the worst happens, you will always have your Sims 4 backup saves ready to restore.
  3. BACKUP YOUR TRAY FILES: Your “tray” folder contains all of your sims, builds, and lots. Without it, your gallery won’t have the sims and builds you’ve created. Just like your saves, copy the tray folder and keep it safe
  4. DON’T RE-ENABLE MODS TOO SOON: Many modders are incredibly quick, but some updates just take longer. If you’re not sure, wait until you see an official “safe to use” post from them.
  5. CHECK IN WITH YOUR FAVORITE MOD CREATORS: Most Sims 4 modders post updates or compatibility notes on their websites, Twitter/X, Patreon, or Discord servers. Before re-adding mods, check that your essentials, such as MC Command Center, UI Cheats, or CAS background mods, have been recently updated. Pro tip: A quick scroll through their posts could save you from hours of troubleshooting.
  6. REPORT NEW ISSUES: Continue to report bugs you come across as you play The Sims 4. Here is a direct link to the EA forums to report bugs.
